Description: |
This is a programme of contemporary American Music from the early 20th century right up to the present day. The importance of rhythm is a theme that runs throughout the show, with minimalist, jazz and Caribbean beats to the fore. You’ll hear Steve Reich’s minimalist masterpiece Proverb, Three Songs by Phillip Glass, through to a suite of Charles Ives songs, an intriguing arrangement of a Paul Simon track by EV’s own Scott Stroman, one of Scott’s own compositions and culminating in a world premiere of three Cuban songs by Odaline de Martinez (the director of the festival). There will be percussion, piano and vibraphone and mallet instruments to create a vibrant, exciting program to start our winter season.
Scott comments: “We've chosen music that's from that kind of rhythmic, minimalist world, but crossing the boundaries between jazz, classical and folk music. It’s just the kind of thing that Eclectic Voices likes to do, where we find comparisons and share ideas from one genre of music to the other.”
What is it? An exciting mix of contemporary American music spanning minimalism, jazz, classical, folk and Caribbean styles. Eclectic Voices explores how different rhythmical styles reflect and complement each other with a succession of mesmeric pieces.
Why should I come? There is something for everyone here. If you are intrigued by all sorts of music you’ll leave happy and enriched. There will be plenty to talk about afterwards!
